Continuous Professsional Development

A brief outline of the issues covered by the two eminent speakers:

At present there is no CPD policy in India,  clearly a neglected area.

      Why CPD?

1.  Inadequate education

2.  Facilitate change

3.  Help teachers to prosper in ELT

How to motivate teachers ? How can the system help teachers embark on this lifelong journey?

Rod Bolitho: the notion of developement must come from within the individual.

‘continuous’  requires constant reinvention. 

‘professional’ teaching as a real profession to be taken seriously. Teachers are typically challenged more than other professions .

‘development’ self-directed change and progress in individuals and institutions.

Echoing and touching upon what Dr. Martin Wedell “If the exams don’t change, nothing changes”.

We need a policy for a financial support as at the moment it operates on a ‘goodwill basis’.

‘Change Forces’ change is mandatory, but growth is optional.

So… as a teacher are you a hedgehog, a dinosaur or a chameleon?

    Dear Krishna

    It is nice to read that your comment on the absence of a CPD policy in India, clearly a neglected area. It may be a good suggestion also.

    Teachers’ profession in common in the majority of the countries
    is not recognized as a profession. I have’nt found any article which describes teaching as a profession similar to that of lawers, engineers and doctors. Yet it has been identified as semi-professional with various characteristics common to other professions.

    What do you suggest to make teaching professional?

    What do you suggest to make a policy on CPD in yor country?

    Why wait for the govt to initiate action, let’s take baby steps ourselves. I was talking to Prof. Rama about the ELTAI and we both felt the need for an ‘active’ SIG. I personally have learnt a lot from the IATEFL YLSIG group and i sorely miss interaction with fellow countrymen.

    Manish S. said something very interesting about the reluctance to spend on prof. development, which is so true. We need to be more generous towards ourselves and loosen those purse strings so as to improve. Why do we wait for the organisations to sponsor our PD courses? The TKT for instance can be taken by individuals anytime. I found preparing for the TKT an enriching and fulfilling experience and not just professionally!

      I agree with all your sentiments Anupma. There is no point in a SIG which is not ‘active’. I first heard Rob Bolitho at the First Policy Dialogue in Chennai in 2007 and was really struck by his view that ‘development is an intransitive verb’, meaning we can only develop ourselves and cannot be developed by others. You have obviously taken this path and benefited, professionally and personally. Rod’s model for CPD is a earthquake but the tremors come from the outside not the inside. I think this is what the British Council’s teacher training programmes in the state education sector can achieve in the long term; if teachers are exposed to new teaching methods that reveal holes in the curriculum and assessment process, this can affect change, ‘from the bottom’.

    Dear Asoka,
    Thanks a lot for your comment. Just back home from New Delhi so this brief reply. There are quite a few articles and research available on teaching as a profession. I will post the details of the same soon. Regarding, CPD policy, I think, first of all there is a need to separate it from INSET. Secondly, other things needed are:
    identification of what English teachers are good for in the Indian context
    Identification of needs of teachers corresponding to the current demands made on them
    defining standars for teachers of English…

    Many more things to write but in haste at the moment.

    Thanks for the reply. I want to know what you are in your profession and where you work to forward you questions. We cannot continue our dialogue as there was nothing regarding teaching as a profession and why it is difficult to make it a prfession similar to laweres’ and doctors’ from your side.

    Thank you for the response and am waiting for your articles to may email address soon. In the University of Colombo, I completed a research on How to develop tachers’ professional development through action research?
    When reading literatureunder this topic, I tried to link research to promote professionalism of teachers at school level.

    Next year I will implement an islandwide project on promoting BE practices through action research for professional development of teachers in a multifaceted way. Now the material is ready for that and going to be printed.

    I know professionalism can be nehanced through research and professionalism can be extended through reseach.

    Please, tell me your experience on action research and teachers’ professionalism.

    Hello Asoka,

    I spoke with MC Geroge Pickering about the phenomena of ‘teachers being challenged’ and we tend to agree that is because, when it comes to my child’s education being on the line, the stakes are incredibly high. What could be more imporatnt than the future of my child?

    And if my child should fail, as a parent am I going to blame myself? Maybe a little…but ultimately I will point my finger directly at the teacher/school/educational system.

    What are your thoughts on this and what could be the way forward?

    I think for CPD to work we need the support of different individuals AND groups. Groups would ideally include teacher assoications, schools and institutions, organisations such as the British Council and education departments.

    I think we need to follow the ADKAR model for change to get CPD off the ground:

    Awareness: awareness of the need for CPD on the part of individuals and groups
    Desire: desire and therefore the will to make the necessary changes
    Knowledge: of what options are available
    Ability: ability and time to make the changes effectively
    Reinforcement: some form of reward which could be personal satisfaction or it could be linked to pay increments/promotion etc.
